Rehabilitation Medicine

At Skagit Island Orthopedics (SIO), the goal is to maximize patients' functional abilities – that is, to help people regain the physical capabilities of normal life as much as possible.

This is why, in addition to performing many kinds of orthopedic surgeries, SIO offers rehabilitation medicine, a specialty that focuses on helping patients recover from injuries to and conditions of the muscles, bones, tissues, and nervous system.

A doctor who has training in this field is called a physiatrist, a physician who focuses on aggressive but non-surgical approaches to treating pain, disease and injury. Often physiatrists are the ideal choice for the treatment of a wide variety of diseases and conditions.

Dr. Jimmy Cui is SIO's physiatrist, specializing in interventional pain management. Conditions that Dr. Cui diagnoses and treats:

  • Acute and chronic pain
  • Arthritis
  • Auto accident injuries
  • Neck pain
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Cervical dystonia
  • Fibromyalgia/myofascial pain
  • Low-back pain
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Musculoskeletal disorders
  • Osteoporosis
  • Peripheral nerve injuries
  • Repetitive use syndrome
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Sports injuries
  • Stroke rehabilitation
  • Work-related injuries
  • .....and more

In addition, SIO physicians are also trained in the following rehabilitation diagnostics and treatments:

  • Botox injection for cervical dystonia
  • EMG/nerve conduction studies
  • Spinal injections under fluoroscopic guidance
  • Medical acupuncture
  • Nerve blocks
  • Radiofrequency nerve ablation procedures

Physical Therapy

In orthopedic medicine, surgery is usually only part of the formula for success. Often physical therapy can be just as important to the outcome of each case.

Skagit Island Orthopedic Center’s physical therapy programs are designed to provide patients from neighboring areas with the best outpatient rehabilitation experience possible. Our physical therapists specialize in orthopedics, manual physical therapy, hand therapy, and lymphedema treatment. They are trained to treat the full spectrum of neuromusculoskeletal dysfunctions.

Whether a patient is recovering from a health condition, an injury, or an operation, the SIO physical therapy staff has the knowledge, skill, and compassion to assist each individual in realizing their highest level of function.

The SIO physical and occupational therapy staff treats patients of all ages and activity levels, working closely with the most prominent physicians and orthopedic surgeons in the Puget Sound region. The practice’s comprehensive rehabilitation programs include therapeutic exercise, hands-on treatment techniques, neuromuscular re-education, modalities and patient education.

Diagnostic X-ray

In most cases, X-rays help an orthopedist perform an initial evaluation and also measure a patient’s progress during healing. SIO provides on-site x-ray services at all locations, using state-of-the-art digital technology.
